We received over two inches of rain which was quite heavenly. In between torrential downpours and a bit of hail, the fog lingered in for a visit and we had a chat. I love how it transforms the Texas landscape and find it so comforting.
Once I found a spot, set up and sat down to paint, I had wished the fencing was not in my sight line. Then I saw the lovely raindrops, the deer grazing nearby and the birds flushed out by Tru which I would never have experienced had my only reference been a photograph of the pasture. Love getting out of the studio.
Near freezing temps are forecast for this evening. I miss my Ohio.

This is my Shyni Tsunami. A few years back and a couple of broken ribs later, I discovered that he was aptly named by his former owner.

Even though it was a cloudy day when I took this photo, he looked so ethereal peering inside. My current focus is experimenting with various light conditions and I found this overcast day quite challenging. Muddying-up the values came a little too easy, but I'm happy with this one. Onto the next!

We're so grateful to see, smell and feel the rain again...in addition to the promising forecast of more showers this weekend.
There was an article in Monday's New York Times' Science section entitled, "A Serving Of Gratitude May Save The Day". More and more research supported the notion that giving thanks is good for you.
May we all remember that when gathered around the table with family and friends...and one kind, well-meaning soul ingites the conversation with politics or the economy. (lol!)

We were blessed with a half inch of rain today - it was absolutely glorious.
The Grace didn't think so. She may be going deaf, but she heard|felt the thunder loud and clear this morning. She took cover under the sheets and wagged her tail as if to ask if everything was going to be alright.

The fabulous Stollenwerks are on 'sabbatical' in Wisconsin and this is their cat, Speck. He's like a downy soft pillow and quite the charmer with those endearing cross-eyed glances. I'm convinced he was the inspiration for the colors of their December wedding a few years back...icy blue and mink...am I right Marita?! ok, that may be stretching it a bit.

I love tennis and was inspired by the tournament to finish this painting...after starting it in July of 2009. I remember exactly when I began this piece because is was during my first painter's workshop and the first time I met Carol Marine. I had followed her work for a few years and was in awe of her acute value sensibility and her fresh palette. She was even more delightful than I had anticipated and the whole experience was a major turning point for me.

So here's to tennis champions Stosur and Djokovic and the entire Marine family who continue to inspire, engage and amaze us.

To clarify my last post which was a little ambiguous, the Jones families in the northeast braved the storm. I was in the 'comfort' of the hottest|driest summer on record in central Texas...if only there were a pipeline that would direct all unwanted rain and flooding water plaguing the northeast to remedy our severe drought in the south. And today with wind advisories, many surrounding areas are battling wildfires...may God bless Texas and all others experiencing trying times.

But there is hope! A cold front is in the forecast for tomorrow...a high of only 90 degrees! ahhh...

Rain dance anyone?

At the time of this post, I had no idea that our neighborhood was under mandatory evacuation. When it comes to wildfires during a severe drought people aire on the side of safety - which is a good thing, though it allows for a lot of misinformation to be passed around really fast. Or worst yet, real emergency info spottily distributed in rural areas. Firefighters were battling three major fires in the Austin area and the media was trying to keep up.

evacuation + wildfires + no coverage after the local evening news = ?!

Our neighborhood's lifeline was Google groups and Twitter. Accurate information was posted immediately by reliable sources at multiple lookout points.

If you don't have a neighborhood network set up, get one started.

This was before Hurricane Irene. Thankfully she was downgraded to a category 1 hurricane. Minus a few repairs and minor flooding, all is well in paradise on Long Beach Island.

She survived a tangle with four dogs. four dogs.

Just a few weeks old, she'll be livin' large at The Drift Inn Wildlife Sanctuary in Driftwood, Texas (http://thedriftinn.org/) through July. Thank you Kim! I'm grateful for these organizations and would like for them to continue serving our community.

This was the first time I got to play with water mixable oils as I aspire to be a solvent-free painter. The sampler pack seemed like a good idea for starters: titanium white, cadmium yellow light, yellow ochre, phthalo green, alizarin crimson and french ultramarine. A few of these pigments are foreign to my palette...what? no burnt umber? no burnt umber. So a refresher in creative color mixing was in order...good thing I wasn't in a hurry.

This painting was approved last night which always triggers a sigh of relief. Commissions can be a bit more stressful and take a while longer when the client's preferences are considered throughout the process. The studio get's a little crowded with all those voices in my head, lol! The creative juices may not always flow without a hitch but that's ok. When your art goes above and beyond your client's expectations - angels sing.

This piece has a delightful twist or shall I say tryst? ...stay tuned for Wednesday evening's post.

Some say if you want to be taken seriously as an artist, its best to keep it professional and not to get too personal on your blog. But when Jack, my loyal companion for over 13 years, died last March - that convention flew out the window. Art is personal. My process is personal. Life is personal. I grew to realize what a disservice it would be to not share in celebrating his life that in so many ways has enriched mine.

So here's a little tribute to Jack Flanegan. This is the day Jack and I met...yes, that's me with the clown vest on (?). My friend, Shannon, and fellow coworkers rescued him as a pup from a shelter and gave me this bundle of joy snuggled in my Christmas stocking the year my father passed on. He survived Parvo when he was 3-months-old which to me was a testament to the power of prayer, his inner strength and incredible soul. My little super hero (he actually had a white star marked on his chest) became my first studio dog who wonderfully reminded me when it was time to take a break.

Jack loved riding in the truck, playing with sticks or tennis balls (thank goodness for the Chuckit!) and he loved loved loved to go swimming. No matter the watering hole, he'd run to the highest launch, making the biggest splash (I can still hear it) while retrieving his ball. pure joy.

He was my confidant and my muse...and I feel lost without him. He was a blessing, no - he is a blessing and I am forever grateful.

Since last Fall this piece has been constructed, deconstructed, sawn, sanded, reconstructed, dismantled again, then sawn and sanded again - got a bit carried away with the table saw.

What a study of color compatibilites, some sing while others fall flat. Always a mystery to me, though you know what works when you see it. Impressionist painter Claude Monet has been quoted as saying, "Colour is my daylong obsession, my joy and my torture."

The final direction reassembled the cut wood strips to create two blended panels, one shown above and the sister piece to be posted soon.

Study of a Kiss...or kiss off!

Some may know what this series is all about while others will be utterly confused and unimpressed at the incomplete work.

This is The Daily Paintworks' Challenge #2 and this time Carol Marine was the culprit. The idea was to pick one object to paint for eight or so 10 minute studies...and not a second more, brushes down. I found this challenge to be an incredibly frustrating dance of two steps forward and three steps back. But I did have my moments. I learned a lot...I discovered that I do not like to be rushed - lol!

Seriously, the objective was for us to become more efficient, to simplify and not get snagged in the details...as in the first study in Round 1. All issues worthy of addressing, no doubt. This may become a ritual with future paintings.

Karen Appleton, a Chicago-based artist, had an idea which has inspired a movement. Check this: Present And Accounted For.

Her thought was to send out symbolic gifts to all who wished to participate. Documented photographs were sent back to Karen and those of us participating would relay the gift to a friend and so on. It's all about reminding us that "the spirit of generosity is alive and well." I believe it also triggers the awareness of the many blessings in our lives.

At this moment, dozens - maybe hundreds - of these 'presents' are circling the planet. How cool is that?

When I received mine, I put it on one of the layout tables in my studio like a bouquet of flowers. A week or so passed and I wondered how I'd know when to contribute to her project. When I awoke to a sparkling blanket of snow a few mornings later, I knew it was going to be picture day! Great fun. Thanks for letting us play, Karen.

She and her husband recently adopted a Great Dane puppy - all 5mo and 70+ lbs! The last photo celebrates their blessing, the joyful new addition to their family.

It was only fitting that I share this story on this special day, my mother's birthday. She's the most incredible, loving and generous person I know. Have a wonderful day Jeannie!

What an awesome morning for an outing with the Plein Air Austin group at the world renowned and free Chapel Dulcinea. Love birds have traveled from as far as Australia to wed in this charming little structure overlooking the hill country. The chapel was built into a cliff with ancient walking trails throughout guiding you to poetic sculptures and gardens.

They say that after vows are exchanged, the couple opens the 10' spanish gothic door behind the alter leading to the bell tower and tug on the rope to ring the bell, announcing their blessed union for all to hear. Pure joy.

Couldn't resist venturing out with my sketchbook on this beautiful day, sadly no time to paint. Founded by Enrico Casarosa, the World Wide SketchCrawl is about getting out there and drawing to your heart's content and, if you so desire, sharing your sketches with others all over the planet. How cool is that?

Saturday morning was cold, but sunny and gorgeous for my first crawl. I met up with the Plein Air Austin group at the Little City Espresso Bar and Cafe on Congress Avenue for a warmer-upper before heading out.

Surprised by an awkwardness of drawing in the city, I chose the lawn of the State Capitol building. I was more at ease with the horses' sniff and snort critique than with strangers' comments. And it was loud.

I know. How pathetic. So pathetic and silly that I started laughing at myself!

After sketching a couple of 20 to 90 minute sessions with a few comical chats from kids passing by, I was so happy that I ventured out of my comfort zone. I had forgotten how beautiful Austin is...how many lovely trees we have shading downtown...the stunning and historic architecture...the laughter and the energy.

The weather was perfect, live music filled the air and I was amazed by the kindness and generosity of our community when it comes to helping out these little guys who can't help themselves.

What a great pose! There was natural light from behind and reflected light from the right. I was grateful that her dad provided the photo because during our introduction, she wasn't as relaxed...rather very focused on her ball...loves her orange ball so I had to venture out of my black and white comfort zone.

Checking-in on one of my favorite art blogs, Barbara Muir Paints, has become a daily ritual. Her writings are as positive and uplifting as her beautifully expressive drawings and paintings. Barbara is acutely aware and thankful of the many gifts surrounding her…and that mindset is wonderfully potent and contagious.

We’re all blessed. The ordinary, in reality, is extraordinary. The simple, yet priceless moments with family and friends are what I cherish most…like when my Pearce, creative and rowing buds were there for me at my opening last Friday night, so incredible.

This weekend we’ll be supporting our friends via live webcast at the Head of the Charles…the rock star all regattas in my book. Austin Rowing Club has 34 rowers competing in Boston today and tomorrow. so awesome.

This work-in-progress was inspired by my crewmates, who are about to cash in on months of dedicated training. Bright and talented women all connected by the river.

This is the drawing I was referring to in a previous post. I've been sketching for days now trying to get Diamond's expression and the lighting just right. It was a bit tricky as he was blasted with sunlight from above but also bathed by the light reflecting up from the concrete pad.

You can set your clocks by this sweet ol' soul...stopping by the studio doorway for his afternoon snack. He takes a look inside, turns his head with ears tracking where you might be, then winnies.

I had a few pieces of spalted pecan left over from a previous project. One in particular caught my eye as the wood grain resembled the ripples left on the water by a rower paddling the river.

Yesterday, a young lady from our crew left Austin for grad school in upstate New York. Beautiful, talented and witty...a true pleasure to be around. She quietly influenced many in a wonderful way. As happy as I am for those moving on to their next big adventure, I selfishly don't like good-byes.

So Miss Amy I will say...Later, Cupcake! We'll see you on the water.

She was the first canine model I drew solely from photographs...I hadn't met her. I know to draw what I see - not what I think I see, but realized that I really missed that part of the process, the introduction.

Cali was quite fun to draw...after hours of studying this face how could you not be happy?

One shouldn't use bristol with pastels...and I was reminded of this while drawing Sugar. Though the paper has a matte surface, there's not enough tooth to hold the powdery pigment. Similar to how a chalkboard receives the chalk yet, just as easily, allows you to smear the powder about. yeah.

Given all that, I felt compelled to finish. Even though this isn't the final pose, it was fun to draw her in the garden. More soon.

Every now and then, we cross paths with someone who, for whatever reason, affects us in a manner that is curiously familiar and refreshing.

24-year-old and wise-beyond-her-years Stephanie, will soon be leaving Austin to attend grad school in Seattle. Her crewmates, friends and family threw a farewell bash in her honor this past weekend, hosted by the fabulous Barksdales. The highlight of the evening was Gaming by Paisley, a hilarious collection of silly human tricks. Video destined for You Tube in the near future? TBD!

Here's the sister painting to the previous posting of morning sky #3 in celebration the first day of summer.

A better shot, but again, another detail as I am having troubles adjusting the magnified focus to auto focus. What you see is the last quarter of the painting, positioned left to right.

The constructed sides I had envisioned for these pieces unfortunately did not work out for this larger size, but it will be revealed in smaller works soon.

The wood in this panel was originally headed for the burn pit. Some see old and weathered, while others see blue sky.

The skies have been beautifully rich with teaser clouds, yielding just a few sprinkles.

This is a work in progress, 13" x 29" - I'll get a better photo when completed. Tomorrow I'm finishing the sides and thought I'd try something new after being inspired by a re-constructed lifeguard tower, post Hurricane Wilma.

My friends, Judy and Molly of Float Press, are proud owners of a letterpress, Esther, and are quite talented at designing and printing broadsides (a poem with a graphic, usually 8" x 10").
They asked if I would design and build a box for their broadsides for the upcoming Poetry at Round Top festival. Of course, how could I refuse, right? Oh, the possibilities! The design was pretty straight forward, but soon into the process I realized I was in way over my head as my shop (or my skill set) is not equipped with the precisioned tools necessary for this build.
Had it not been for the help and encourgement from the very talented Rob Eberle of Wildwood in Henly and the extraordinary Woodcraft team in Austin at Burnet and 183, this box would have been throttled out to pasture.

I've received a few emails requesting that I post the photograph, if not drawn from life, and an in-process shot of my next drawing. My pleasure!

First I do a quick sketch, then place the features. Darkening select areas with charcoal, my drawing and palette become one as I spread the dry medium onto the lighter areas.

Chase is a 90lb+ catahoula. He can appear quite intimidating, but he's really a teddy bear.

I had an interesting time with this drawing. He has a beautiful black and white dappled coat and it was a challenge to keep him from flattening out. A wonderful exercise, but I still see the afterimage dancing around.

A quick study for an upcoming commission.

My sketchbook is full of drawings that are more reminiscent of gesture scribbles than quick tonal studies, but I'm getting better at editing faster. Conte stick charcoal and pastels have proven to be more helpful than the pencils. And I get longer poses if I turn the horses out after breakfast as opposed to before dinner.

After reading a few of your comments I thought it suitable to elaborate.

This sweet old boy was a rescue. One of his previous owners had neglected to remove an undersized halter when he was younger which left a permanent indentation on his nose...which I chose to edit out. He has a residual look of fear or mistrust in his eye that surfaces from time to time that this drawing conveys.

Of the three, Wiseguy is the one who most enjoys his daily grooming and watering down in the summer heat. If we haven't brushed down or hosed off the right spot, he kindly reminds us by backing up or turning around in circles. An incredible soul.

This square version works better for me than the previous post...yes, I'm a tweaker!

I typically complete a larger drawing so that I have more wiggle room when it comes to cropping or more room on the page to correct the layout. I know, my college profs would not be impressed! My focus with the recent charcoal drawings has been value and light, but mostly composition.

In this shot, if I remember correctly, Sunny was patiently tracking his Papa to make sure he went with him to run a few errands in the truck. Whether it's Tractor Supply, Home Depot or the bank, they've got treats for Sunny.

Saturday was a beautiful, sunny day. I was outside using the garden hose and thought of Baby Blue, our dear neighbor's dog. She passed on a few years back, just a year old, and we miss her. I drew her portrait from a photograph shortly thereafter.

I found him in my Christmas stocking, given to me by my friend Shannon and a few coworkers. He's got the body of a lab with doberman markings - only with floppy ears and a wagging tail.

On 24 September he'll be thirteen years young - 91 for you and me - slowing down, but loyal as can be.

Due to the weather I didn't row this morning and instead sketched Hoover sporting this pose after breakfast. He can sleep in the most curious positions anytime...anywhere...because he can.

Whenever I have difficulty capturing the color I see as opposed to the color I think I see, I get recalibrated with a series of tonal studies in burnt umber.

I'm currently searching for an archival clear sealer to prep the panel that is compatible with oils. More often than not, I like the wood grain to show through rather than gesso over it. Any suggestions?

As mentioned in an earlier post, this piece was inspired by my friend's 43rd birthday, 09/09/09. A special day or what?! Today I was reminded that I hadn't shown the finished work.

I was given a bag of painted white pieces of wood that Birthday Girl never wanted to see again, we've all had those DIY projects, yes? In the spirit of 'never say never' they were repurposed, repainted and intended to be regifted to BG - 43 bits composed in nine rows - as shown in the second photo. I liked the concept, but it wasn't what I had imagined. The inlaid turquoise aesthetic I had pictured in my head turned out more like cold, awkward cobblestone.

How could I expect my friend to enjoy the piece, if I wasn't happy with it? So I sanded it down and started over which was a little scary, may sound crazy to some but there was really no other option. It's common for painters to now and again wipe off unsuccessful in-process works on canvas. I was much happier with the finished piece as shown in the first photo.

There is a freedom on the other side of the fear of making mistakes. Though the second attempt doesn't always turn out more pleasing, there are no mistakes as far as I am concerned...only opportunities for learning...and I've learned a lot.

A question for my artist and designer buds. Have you ever created a more inspired study or preliminary mock-up than the final deliverable?

Yes it is just a tonal study and it isn't as detailed as the commissioned piece, but her eyes are dancing more so here. And even though it wasn't included in our agreement, my client deserves this one as well. I've been holding her hostage long enough.

When I was in the military (seems like a lifetime ago) our squadron had a training exercise at Howard AB in Panama. My cohorts and I had a free afternoon one weekend and ventured off base to a secluded beach with black sand...yes, black sand. Seemed another-worldly, more coarse than what I had seen on our shores, like polished micro river pebbles. Truly phenominal.

A couple of you were curious about the blended wood panels. I've shown a side detail in an earlier post, but decided to take a shot of this one as well. Choosing to repurpose as opposed to adding to the landfill, my color studies are composed of spare wood pieces that are bulit up, glued and biscuit joined.

To keep the creative juices flowing when you feel all squeezed out, experience has taught me to alternate simplicity with complexity.

Recently I finished a painting in which I was especially emotionally attached. For weeks I dabbled, knowing it wasn't quite right...sanding over it...cutting it in half...at long last, complete.

My preference for capturing the true character of the subject is through the sketch portrait with the graphite underlay drawing exposed as an integral part of the finished work.
